The Faculty of Clinical Medicine at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) stands as a beacon of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare delivery. Established in 2010, the faculty offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree program that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding to excel in the medical profession.

A Brief History of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine

Founded in 2010, the Faculty of Clinical Medicine was established to coordinate the academic and clinical training of 500 and 600 level medical students. It has since grown to become one of the leading medical schools in Nigeria.

The MBBS degree program offered by the faculty ensures students receive comprehensive training in both the theoretical and clinical aspects of medicine. Graduates from this program are known for their professionalism and competence, reflecting the high academic standards upheld by the faculty.

The founding of this faculty marked a significant step in COOU's history, aligning its medical education with global best practices.

Milestones and Achievements: A Legacy of Excellence

Since its inception, the Faculty of Clinical Medicine has proudly graduated nine sets of medical doctors who are now contributing significantly in hospitals and institutions across Nigeria, Europe, and America. These alumni have excelled in residency programs and medical careers, validating the high quality of training received at COOU.

The faculty is renowned for the academic excellence of its students, with many earning distinctions in Pediatrics, Community Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery, and Internal Medicine.

From a humble beginning with only one professor, the faculty now boasts 13 professors who are leaders in their fields, further strengthening the academic and clinical foundation of the MBBS program.

Leadership Legacy: Previous Deans of the Faculty

  • Professor E.C. Ojiyi (2010 – 2012) – Pioneer dean who laid the foundation for academic and clinical excellence.
  • Professor P.U. Nze (2012 – 2018) – Expanded academic offerings and strengthened clinical training.
  • Professor E.C. Ojiyi (2018 – 2020) – Returned for a second tenure, enhancing research and institutional partnerships.
  • Professor O.S. Ejiofor (2020 – Present) – Current dean, known for advancing research and refining the MBBS curriculum.
